3 Adelaide Farmers Markets Worth Getting Up Early For

Our favourite cheap weekend date starts at one of the Adelaide farmers markets: a coffee, something warm for breakfast, and a bag of whatever’s in season to cook that night. These three run every week, they’re free to walk into, and they’re all wrapped up by lunchtime, so set an alarm.

Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market, Wayville (Sundays)

  • Area: Wayville, just south of the city
  • Cost: Free entry; first half hour of parking free, then paid
  • Time needed: 1–2 hours
  • Best time: Sunday, 8:30am–12:30pm
  • Official link: Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market

The big one. Around 100 stalls set up in and around the Stirling Angas Pavilion, and it’s a food-only market, so it’s all farmers and producers rather than candles and crafts. It’s completely flat, with toilets behind the pavilion and undercover seating if the weather turns.

Drive in through the Rose Terrace entrance and tap your card at the boom gate. If you’d rather leave the car at home, train, tram and bus stops are a 5–10 minute walk away. Most stalls take cards, but a few are cash only. Dogs can’t come into the market itself (assistance dogs aside). It runs every Sunday except during the Royal Adelaide Show in September.

Adelaide Hills Farmers Market, Mount Barker (Saturdays)

  • Area: 23 Mann Street, Mount Barker
  • Cost: Free entry
  • Time needed: 1–2 hours
  • Best time: Saturday, 8:30am–12:30pm
  • Official link: Adelaide Hills Farmers Market

This is the relaxed one. It’s held under big old elm trees, there’s live music every week, free activities for kids and plenty of lawn to sit on with your breakfast. Unlike the other two, dogs are welcome, so bring the pup.

We like to stock up here and then keep going, with a slow drive home through the Hills villages.

Willunga Farmers Market (Saturdays)

  • Area: Willunga High School grounds, Main Road, Willunga
  • Cost: Free entry
  • Time needed: 1–2 hours
  • Best time: Saturday, 8am–12 noon
  • Official link: Willunga Farmers Market

South Australia’s first farmers market, started in 2002 in a pub car park and now on the grounds of Willunga High School. The produce is all from the Fleurieu: fruit and veg, meat, seafood, dairy, bread, wine, cider, plants and a good breakfast. Leave the dog at home for this one, because dogs aren’t allowed on the school site (registered service dogs are fine).

It turns into an easy Fleurieu day. Fill a basket, then head to the coast for a beach picnic or a late-afternoon sit at Sellicks from our free sunset spots.

A few tips from us

  • Go early for the best of everything. By the last hour the popular stalls are often sold out.
  • Bring your own bags, and a cooler bag in the car if you’re buying meat or dairy.
  • Want more than produce? The monthly Adelaide Hills markets have crafts, plants and homemade goods as well.

Pairs with: a picnic. Take your haul to one of our picnic spots around Adelaide and make a morning of it.
