Adelaide Hills Bakery and Lookout Pairings for a Cheap Weekend Morning

One of my favourite cheap weekend mornings goes like this: pick up something warm from an Adelaide Hills bakery, drive five or ten minutes, and eat it with the whole city below you. Here are two pairings that work. Each is a bakery and a lookout close enough that your pie is still hot when you get there.

Crafers Bakehouse + Mount Lofty Summit

Crafers Bakehouse is at 5 Main Street, Crafers. Their hours are Tuesday to Friday 7am–4pm, Saturday 7am–3:30pm and Sunday 9am–3pm. They’re closed Mondays and public holidays, and they close earlier if they sell out, so don’t leave it too late.

From there it’s a short drive up to Mount Lofty Summit, more than 710 metres above sea level, with views across the city to the coast. Entry is free and parking fees apply. From October to March the car park gates are open 6am–11pm. The lookout is accessible, with accessible parking and toilets. No dogs are allowed in the park.

Banana Boogie Bakery + Windy Point

Banana Boogie is a much-loved local bakery in Belair, the kind of place you go for pies and slices. Their website doesn’t list opening hours, so check their site or Facebook page before you go, especially on weekends.

Then head down Belair Road to Windy Point, where the car park entrance is at the corner of Kalyra Road. The view takes in the plains, the city and the gulf, and it’s free. I couldn’t find an official page listing the lookout’s gate hours, so if you’re going early or late, check first.

Pairs with: Crafers Bakehouse is a few minutes from the Lakeside Loop at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, and Banana Boogie is near the Wood Duck Walk at Belair. Both are in my easy Adelaide walks. For the evening version, see my free sunset spots around Adelaide. On a market weekend, Stirling is next door to Crafers, so check my Adelaide Hills markets guide.
