If you’re planning strawberry picking near Adelaide this October, here’s the honest version. Right now only one farm near the city is opening its patch to pickers: Harvest the Fleurieu at Mount Compass. Mt Barker Strawberries sells ready-picked berries from its shed, and Beerenberg’s famous patch doesn’t usually open until November.
Harvest the Fleurieu, Mount Compass
- Area: Mount Compass, Fleurieu (2256 Victor Harbor Road)
- Cost: $ (patch entry plus berries by weight; check the official page for current prices)
- Time needed: About an hour in the patch, two hours with the café
- Best time: Morning
- Official link: Harvest the Fleurieu – Pick your own
This is the one. The pick-your-own patch reopens on Monday 12 October, 9am–4pm, and it’s walk-in only, so there’s nothing to book. Until then the patch is closed. If you’re going this weekend, it’s the shop and café only.
The Market Hall and café is open 8:30am–5pm every day. It stocks local produce from more than 80 South Australian suppliers. The house-made pies, pasties, sausage rolls, cakes and ice cream come from the on-site bakery, which has a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. Pick first, then sit down with a pie, and take the berries home.
Mt Barker Strawberries (ready-picked, not pick-your-own)
- Area: Fidler Lane, Mount Barker, Adelaide Hills
- Cost: $
- Time needed: A quick farm-gate stop
- Best time: Morning
- Official link: Mt Barker Strawberries – Contact and opening times
This family farm has been growing in the Hills for over 40 years. You can’t pick here, but you can buy freshly picked strawberries straight from the shed door, along with their strawberry topping, olive oil and other produce in season. Shed sales run 8am–5pm daily from October to early June. They ask you to call ahead on public holidays (farm number 08 8391 1042). Early in the season, I’d ring before driving out anyway.
Beerenberg Farm, Hahndorf (from November)
- Area: Mount Barker Road, Hahndorf, Adelaide Hills
- Cost: $
- Time needed: 1–2 hours once picking opens
- Best time: Weekday mornings in season
- Official link: Beerenberg – Strawberry picking
Beerenberg has run pick-your-own since 1975. The patch typically opens from November to April, depending on the weather and the crop, and right now their site says the patch is closed until next season. Save this one for a November weekend, and check their website on the morning you go, because the patch sometimes closes for a day or two once it’s picked out. The farm shop is open 9am–5pm every day except Christmas Day if you just want jam.
Pairs with: Mount Compass is close to the coast, so finish the day at Sellicks Beach, one of my free sunset spots around Adelaide. If you’re in the Hills, my picnic spots around Adelaide has a few places to eat your haul. For seasonal fruit without the picking, try the Adelaide farmers markets.
